September last year was the last time my hair saw a hair dresser – so it was about time to get a new hair cut. The problem is that I don’t like the prices here in France (20 euro for a crappy hair dresser) and I have no idea where to get a great hair cut. Obviously a trip to my hairdresser in Holland would be even more expensive.
A couple of years ago I had my cousin – who was like 10 years old by that time – cut my hair and I did my bangs. It wasn’t too bad.
Another couple of years ago I cut my bangs when I was in Ecuador. I was totally done with how they were hanging there and I couldn’t wait until I would be back in Holland. I liked it. Even the hairdresser – whom I visited when I came home – was surprised and said that it wasn’t horrible. She even took the word ‘talent’ in her mouth.
So, when I was thinking of cutting my hair, the idea of doing it all by myself came up. It sounded like an insane idea, but hey, why not? If I’m really talented, it could be a success. If not, I could jump into my car and race to the nearest hairdresser. Wearing a paper bag over my head, of course.
Thursday and friday I had my days off. My master plan was to cut my hair on thursday evening, so in case of a disaster I would have all friday to cover up the damage.
So on thursday I went into the bathroom, on high heels so I could get a better view of myself in the mirror. Armed with an ordinary pair of scissors – didn’t know where to buy proper scissors to cut hair with. I must admit, the first cut was pretty scary. Even worse, I tried cutting the long side by holding it above my head and watching in the mirror. I looked like a drunk, trying to redirect my hand all the time, going the exact opposite from what I told it to do. It was very hard to even get in touch with my hair, so I had to change my plan of action.
The Battlefield
After trying a bit of this and a bit of that, I got the hang of it. It was actually very nice to be able to do it myself. I don’t know how it’s with you guys, but when I’m at the hair dresser, I always have a hard time telling them what I want. And an even harder time to trust that they understood what I have in mind. Cutting my hair on my own commands, made it so much easier to adjust and experiment.
Even though I’m still very unexperienced, I really like the result. Maybe even more than when I went to the hairdresser. I think it’s true, I really might be a talent in doing my own haircut!
I know it’s hard to show the difference on pictures, with my hair being blond and straight, but let me know what you think if you do see it!
After! By the way, I know the bangs aren’t really straight, gonna fix that!
Have you ever done your own hair cut?
